Brooke Happe

From moving to Des Moines and starting a family Brooke couldn't be happier (we had to).

As a kid what do you remember doing all the time? Growing up I played sports all the time. When I wasn't involved in sports activities I remember hanging out and doing things with my family.

Why do you call Des Moines home? Des Moines is home because this was the city that started new beginnings for me. I grew up in Sioux city where I attended school through college. I moved here to begin school at Des Moines University-Osetopathic Medical Center to get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. While in school my husband and I were able to explore the city. We loved the bigger city and I got a job here and began our family. The Des Moines area is where I started my profession and my family.

"Des Moines is home because this was the city that started new beginnings for me."

What’s currently keeping you busy? Life as a mother of three young children, wife, physical therapist and owner/creator of b.e.happe Designs.

Tell us more about b.e.happe Designs. We love that you donate hats to kids and we feel that more people need to know! b.e.happe Designs is a handmade knit and crochet shop. Hats and scarves are a majority of what I make. For every item purchased I donate a hat to Blank Children's Hospital.

When I started this small business I knew I wanted my children and family to be a part of this and so each month we go and donate our hats. My oldest loves doing this and last time we donated there was actually a boy walking around with a nurse wearing a hat and the joy on his face when he yelled 'mommy there's a hat we brought' was so rewarding. It was not one of ours but it was still awesome!

Definitely busy! What apps or practices help you juggle everything that you do? Honestly I haven't used any apps yet. Still exploring all the various apps out there. I am very productive at nap time and once the kids go down for bed at night.

"Be true to yourself."

What are you most proud of and why? My family. I am grateful for husband, children, parents and siblings who have given me opportunities and made me the person I am today.

From one maker to another what is your tip or advice? Be true to yourself. Be the maker you want to be and don't change you vision just fit in.

Who is someone you admire that others may know in the Des Moines area and why do admire them? I admire all the small business owners, shops and boutiques. I have connected with Jessica Plotz from Gia Rose Designs and Leah Davidson from Lovey Lake with my handmade business. They make amazing handmade clothing for children and women, have a successful business and are also mothers.

Walk us through your typical weekend?  I am not sure anything is typical with a 5, 3 and 1 year old... but a weekend usually involves waking up early to three active kids, breakfast together, then we typically go do something in the community as a family whether it's farmers market, park, SCI, playing outside, shopping. Naps in afternoon then dinner together. Sunday involves church, meals and spending time with one another. In between the hustle of our weekend I try and knit or crochet.

"Creative people not only create and imagine but invent, problem solve and have new ways of thinking."

Convince us to visit one of your favorite places in the Des Moines area. There are a lot of places that my family and I enjoy going to from I-Cubs to DT Farmers Market and all the parks in the area but one of my children's and I favorite places to go is Enabling Garden in Altoona.

The garden is gorgeous with all the vegetation, my boys love looking for bees and bugs in the garden. The play area is fun for the children to use their creative play and gross motor skills from using the musical instruments to digging in the sand pit and playing with the wood blocks.  My kiddos love to run around the walking path and feed the ducks there also.

If you could grant the Des Moines one wish what would it be and why? I think it would have to be for everyone to have the resources, outlet or ability to enhance a persons creative thinking abilities. Creative people not only create and imagine but invent, problem solve and have new ways of thinking.

I would wish that everyone in DSM could explore this side of themselves or enjoy this characteristic of others whether that be through a supporting small business, learning a new hobby or just finding a way to enjoy themselves and life in the area.
